Green River Fest
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Abbey Road, Pamela Means recently performed that whole Beatles album, in order, solo, on acoustic guitar. Means has the skills and the artistic vision to pull off this kind of feat with aplomb. Best known for her folk music career she is also a fine jazz singer and social activist. Originally from Milwaukee, she moved to Boston and now lives in the Pioneer Valley. Curve Magazine called her “one of the fiercest guitar players and politically rooted singer-songwriters in the music industry today.” Her latest recording, the driving, Impeachment Now! pulls no punches.
“The president, is incompetent, an embarrassment, im-peach-ment now.”
Falcon Ridge Folk Festival
"Like many contemporary singer-songwriters, Pamela Means paid her dues literally from the ground up. From her Milwaukee WI home, she moved to Boston and took her music below the streets to the hallowed halls of Boston’s subway system striving to connect with people, with herself, and with her music. Since then, she has collected a boatload of awards and has been described as one of the fiercest guitar players and politically rooted songwriters in the music industry. Pamela Means’s newest solo acoustic albums, Impeachment Now! and Plainfield were recorded live in the studio (and on stage),
no overdubs, no edits, just like they used to make ‘em!"
No Depression
“Pamela Means' 'Plainfield' turns pain into perfect art.”
Midwest Record (Chicago IL)
“Wow. ['Plainfield'] is the deeply personal album you wanted Tracy Chapman to make. Alone in the studio with just her guitar and one take tape rolling...this is the anti-pop antidote that will reach you no matter where your sympathies lie ...”
Shepherd Express (Milwaukee WI)
“[Means] has the state of the union on her mind, especially the toll of being black in America, the denial of democratic ideals and the fatigue that comes from the sense that problems aren’t being solved—and perhaps are getting worse. Plainfield is a powerful set of performances in the post-Dylan folk tradition.”
Daily Hampshire Gazette (Northampton MA)
“Means sings, lightly striking her strings for Michael Hedges-style harmonics that sparkle like stars in a hilltown sky.”
Telegram (Worcester MA)
"Means has a way of capturing a slow-burn of emotion, a smoldering of heartbreak and wistfulness that’s practically tangible."
Bill Copeland Music News (New England)
"Pamela Means’s eighth CD Plainfield is a solo acoustic delight. Snappy acoustic guitar playing, raw, emotive vocals, and lyrics focused on personal and social justice make for one fine organic work. Titled after the western Massachusetts town of Plainfield that inspired Means's creativity during a dark period in her life, the album speaks volumes of what’s going on in the human heart during this time in American history."
Valley Advocate (Northampton MA)
"If you haven’t heard Pamela Means [Jazz Project] sing a melancholy jazz tune, do yourself a favor and go see her show... Means is an accomplished singer and guitarist who’s best described as Billie Holiday meets Eddie Lang."
Buddy Mondlock (Hit songwriter for Garth Brooks, Nanci Griffith, etc...)
“Pamela Means is the real deal.”
Burns Maxey (Easthampton MA)
"[Pamela Means Jazz Project]...just what was needed for the soul."
HiFi Magazine (London, England)
“Means is, quite simply, superb.”
Press Herald (Portland ME)
“...insanely brilliant...”
Oregon Live (Portland OR)
“She's got more chops than the gentle pickers of her ilk will ever have.”
Curve Magazine
“Singer-songwriter and demigod, Pamela Means, is one of the fiercest guitar players and politically rooted [singer-songwriters]
in the music industry today... With [Pamela Means Jazz Project Vol. 1] Means takes her rightful place
among contemporary superstar jazz vocalists such as Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones.”
