Cafe: Gaylord's Cafe Espresso

Phone: 510.658.2877
Rating: 3 1/2 cups

Notes: Excellent organic coffee and espresso drinks (white chocolate mocha's, in particular) topped off with those crazy leaf designs; a friendly sunny vibe, hardwood floors, and brick wall chic that far surpasses the stumpy Starbucks down the block.

Cafe: Outspoken / Coffee Diva
Address: 1422 Monterey St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
Phone: 804.545.7664
Rating: 3 cups

Notes: Cute little place in uptown SLO, sharing space with a bicycle shop. Featuring organic & fair trade coffees, fruit smoothies, vegetable juices and more.

Cafe: Herkimer's Coffee
Address: 7320 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103
Phone: 206.784.0202
Rating: 4 cups

Notes: Named after Herkimer, NY, this is one of the best coffee discoveries in Seattle. It's near Ballard in the Phinney Ridge 'hood. Excellent locally brewed beans, wi-fi for laptops, sunny vibe, and every drink decorated with that flick of the wrist flair that makes Seattle rock.

Cafe: Brewbakers
Address: 97 Main St., Keene, NH 03431
Phone: 603.355.4844
Rating: 3 cups

Notes: Really chill vibe in here... Sunny, cozy couches, hardwood floors, small tables and window nooks all add to the flavor. Extensive selection of excellent coffee and tea (some are organic) as well as a great menu of snacks, sandwiches and salads...

Cafe: Appalachian Bean
Address: 67 Main St., North Adams, MA 01247
Phone: 413.663.7543
Rating: 3 cups

Notes: A great (and big) place in downtown North Adams. Good coffee (not organic) and a full menu of daytime grub. Cheap, too. Living room scene in the back, hardwood floors, and friendly folks behind the counter add a lot of charm. (off Rt. 2)

Cafe: Mocha Joe's
Address: 82 Main St., Brattleboro, VT
Phone: 802.257.JOES
Rating: 3 1/2 cups

Notes: They roast their own beans at the mighty Mocha Joe's. They also supply beans to many co-ops and coffee houses throughout the state. In house, they have a great selection of coffee (including organic options) brewed daily and available for purchase. You can also mail-order beans from their website. The cafe sitting area is kinda junky, but the general vibe is mellow and the peeps are friendly... (exit 1 and 2 off I-91)

Cafe: Cafe
Address: 13 Rockingham St., Bellows Falls, VT 05101
Phone: 802.463.1336
Rating: 2 cups

Notes: Tiny one-room joint in downtown Bellows Falls. (Between exits 5 & 6, off I-91, Rt. 5) Bellows Falls is pretty small itself, so we should be grateful there's any coffee there at all. This isn't really a coffee house. They sell pastries, wine, bread and cheese among other things. But, they do have coffee (1 thermos regular, 1 decaf) and it's good bean from Mocha Joe's in Brattleboro. Whew...

Cafe: Woodstock Coffee and Tea
Address: 43 Central St. (Rt. 4), Woodstock, VT 05091
Phone: 802.457.9268
Rating: 4 cups

Notes: This is a small, cute little place in downtown Woodstock. 13 miles west of I-91, exit 1 (Rt. 4, in Vermont). 4 cup rating because they serve only (and sell) certified organic, fair trade coffee.

Cafe: Peter B's Espresso
Address: 984 Farmington Av., West Hartford, CT 06107
Phone: 860.231.9390
Rating: 3 cups

Notes: Peter B's is a great stop off of I-84, exit 41 northbound or 43 southbound, to be exact. Special shout out to Kristi, who happens to be one of the best baristas around...

Cafe: Pied Cow Coffeehouse
Address: 3244 SE Belmont, Portland, OR 97214
Phone: 503.230.4866
Rating: 4 cups

Notes: The Pied Cow rocks. Period. They have great mocha's and the best vibe around.. It's a house morphed into a coffeehouse/hang spot... Espresso drinks were once made with Torrefazione coffees (until it sold out) and now with Illy. The Cow also has an impressive menu, including wine, brie, and hookahs; they also boast a very chill outdoor seating situation... The saddest part is that they don't open until 4pm.

Cafe: Juna's Cafe
Address: 146 The Commons, Ithaca, NY 14850
Phone: 607.256.4292
Rating: 4 cups

Notes: Juna's Cafe is right on the commons in beautiful Ithaca. They have an excellent and varied vegetarian menu in addition to a selection of coffee and espresso drinks. Some coffees are organic (always a plus) and there are soy milk options for the soy-inclined. Juna's is also an independent woman-owned establishment...
